Oracle professionals know that the two main sites for information and support on running Oracle products are the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), and My Oracle Support (MOS).

OTN is free for anyone, and provides discussion forums, white papers and free base-release software downloads under the Developer License.

MOS requires a paid software license and support contract. It offers technical support notes, bug access, request tracking and patches. It is the only place you can get critical updates and patch sets to, for instance, bring a 10.2.0.1 database up to 10.2.0.4.

Many people are just starting learning Oracle, or are out of work and no longer associated with a support contract. Those people could clearly benefit from access to MOS to read support notes, and solve problems they are having while experimenting with Oracle products under the Developer License.

A few years ago, my friend and Oracle ACE Director Dan Morgan mentioned that one could buy a very cheap product in the Oracle Store, opt to pay for support on it, and obtain MOS access for very little money. This week I mentioned this fact to my Oracle DBA Class at the University of Washington, and my students wanted to know which product to buy, and for how much. I decided to find out, and here’s what I did.

Navigate to http://shop.oracle.com.

In the left-hand menu, click on All Products at the bottom.

In the gray bar with heading labels, click on Price Range (on the right), and select $.40 – $8.00.

The only item that appears for me is Oracle Management Pack Plus for Identity Management. Click on Buy Now.

On the product page, change the Metric selection to Non Employee User External – $2.00.

Click Add to Cart.

Click Checkout (upper right)

Make sure you have checked Include First Year Support for License Products.

Click Checkout, and follow the purchase process.

In a day or so, you will receive an email with your Customer Service Identifier (CSI) and you will be able to register for My Oracle Support.

NOTE: It may take more than 24 hours for Oracle to activate your CSI on MOS. If you try to reigster your new CSI on MOS before Oracle activates it, you will receive the error, “This CSI does not allow registration.” In this case, just wait. Oracle will activate your CSI eventually.

This process doesn’t give you the right to download or use material from the MOS site for any purpose not covered under the Developer License or the product license you purchased for $2.00 from the Oracle Store. I am providing this information because it could help those legitimately covered under the Developer License.

Openworld 2010, despite the supposedly lagging economy, had record attendance again this year. No doubt this was the result of Oracle acquiring something like fourteen companies since last year, including Sun in 2009. The crowds were thick, divided about evenly between geeks in badly-fitting vendor t-shirts and slick sales-side hustlers with dress pants and shiny shoes. I landed somewhere in the middle of the two (badly-fitting dress shirt, comfortable jeans and loafers), proudly sporting a long dangling codpiece of ribbons from my attendee badge:

My OOW2010 Codpiece

Oracle made a number of important announcements this year at OpenWorld, including a the Exalogic machine, and support for Amazon EC2, which I blogged about here.

For me, the highlight of the week was meeting a number of top Oracle technical minds at Oracle Closed World, the brainchild of Mogens Nørgaard from Denmark. Members of the Oak Table and other luminaries of our field stood up and spoke candidly about technology, drilling down to the most minute detail. Computerworld Denmark covered the event well here.

I’ll be speaking to a hung over dwindling crowd at noon today, the last day of OOW, and the day after the blowout party on Treasure Island. By telling people about running Oracle on EC2, I hope to make life easier for DBA-kind. Amazon’s IaaS cloud gives us all a cheap way to provision host resources on demand, and get things done in hours that would otherwise take weeks (or be impossible) via normal corporate hardware procurement processes.

This will be the last big conference for me for a while – I am going to focus on Blue Gecko customers, research and sharing my insights here.

Oracle OpenWorld 2010 is just bursting with big cloud-related announcements this week. As I prepare to present on the Amazon cloud at OOW2010 on Thursday (http://bit.ly/aSKdIQ), I thought I would highlight two of the biggest cloud-related announcements of the week.

Exalogic

We all know about Exadata, Oracle’s hardware-based storage-optimized RAC monster capable of over 1 million IOPS. In his keynote, Larry Ellison announced Exalogic, an appliance that is meant to provide cloud-like private internal infrastructure. Oriented towards middleware, Exalogic’s marketing materials emphasize the elasticity of resources and promote middleware consolidation onto a small set of Exalogic nodes.

Certification for Oracle on Oracle VM-based Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud

Oracle and Amazon jointly announced this week that they will soon provide Oracle VM (OVM) based EC2 instances certified to run any Oracle software certified on traditional Oracle VM. This includes Oracle Applications, Peoplesoft, Siebel and many other Oracle products. The issue of Oracle supportability and certification on EC2 has been a major sticking point for customers since EC2 and Oracle began collaborating over two years ago. This announcement should allay some of the concerns regarding running Oracle on EC2.

Previously, Oracle supported only the database, middleware and Oracle Enterprise Manager on standard EC2 instances.

With this annoucement, the division of support responsibility remains the same. Oracle issues are handled by Oracle Support, and EC2 issues are handled by Amazon.

#!/bin/bash
# Program: download.sh
# Description: Download Oracle patches from Metalink<!--more-->

PROGRAM=`basename $0`
USAGE="Usage: $PROGRAM [ patch file ]"

[ $# -lt 1 ] && echo $USAGE && exit 1

patch=$1
username=$METAUSER
password=$METAPASS
URL="http://updates.oracle.com/Orion/Download/download_patch/$patch"

while [ -z $username ]; do
 echo -n "Enter metalink username: "
 read username
done

while [ -z $password ]; do
 echo -n "Enter metalink password: "
 stty -echo
 read password
 stty echo
done

wget --http-user=$username
--http-password=$password
--no-check-certificate
--output-document=$patch $URL

exit

It’s pretty basic, so you can add error checking or more sophisticated wget options as you like. The only thing you need is the full name of the patch zip file and your Metalink credentials:

$ download.sh <zip file>;

You can export your Metalink username and password to the variables $METAUSER and $METAPASS, respectively, or the script will prompt you for both.

Let me know how this works for you, or if you have a better option – I’m sure there are plenty out there.

OK, so there are a ton of things to do right after a fresh R12 install. And before anyone says anything, I know each of my steps has multiple steps; I though 6 things made a simpler blog title, that’s all.

Nevertheless, below are the major tasks I think every Apps DBA should do right away before letting anyone log in. I call these out for two reasons. First because they’re invasive and tough to do once people start logging in and using the system. And second, some are security-related, so it’s good to get them done right away.

1. Perform intrusive DB/application security steps.

There are many security precautions that should be applied to a fresh install, but these should be done immediately before allowing anyone to log in. A fresh install is basically a wide open portal complete with known passwords (APPS/APPS, SYSTEM/MANAGER) so until some of these steps are taken, your new system is extremely vulnerable. In no particular order:

Change all the standard database and application passwords. All of them. Except APPLSYSPUB because you’ll end up handing it out anyway.

Set up auditing (love the syslog feature).

Lock down the listener with a password.

Drop unneeded DB links.

Set up node validation checking if you can. If you have developers or others connecting via sqlplus and you can’t consolidate them onto a Terminal Services box or similar, then you won’t be able to do this.

2. Clean up the database.

The default database has all the data, but it’s woefully lacking in structure. I see MANY systems that years later still have the same structure set by rapidwiz. At a minimum:

Spread out the control files. Put one copy on at least two separate devices.

Multiplex the online redo log groups and spread them out over separate devices as well.

Enable Oracle Managed Files (OMF). Huge convenience factor, so I do it whenever possible. This step is optional, though.

Convert to ASM if possible. ASM provides a lot of benefits and is getting better with every release.

Create a flash recovery area, then enable archiving and flashback. Even if you don’t want to back up the environment, set RMAN up to clean up the archive logs periodically and keep your database archiving. Flashback is incredibly valuable in a test environment and archiving is required for flashback.

Set up a password file.

Set up the SPFILE.

3. Set up a custom tablepsace and application top.

Even if you have no stated need for a custom application top, build one. When you or your customer needs it, you’ll want it right away. Having it available will prevent you from taking shortcuts and placing files and objects where they don’t belong out of expediency.

Create a custom tablespace.

Create a custom application top with OAM so it’s in the context file.

Register the application top in the application.

Set up custom environment variables in $APPL_TOP/APPS${CONTEXT_NAME}.env

4. Clean up the users.

Set up custom profiles and assign them to all users. You can’t really set standard accounts to expire, but you can create profiles that require password complexity and prevent password reuse. Nothing should use the DEFAULT profile; take control of system access before it becomes too big of a pain.

Lock unneeded user accounts.

If people need APPS account access, set up proxy users.

Create some roles for named accounts. If people need to connect directly to the database, don’t try to manage all the privileges individually.

Make sure to use your custom tablespace as the default tablespace for all named accounts. Set up a different tablespace if you like, just don’t use a standard application tablespace.

Change all the passwords (see step 1 above).

5. Patch it up.

Before anyone gets in, lift the entire system to the highest possible rev. Once users and developers dig in, they aren’t going to want to make any fundamental changes, so patch your new system as high as you can right away. Core tech especially. Iin no particular order:

Latest CPU patches for all tiers

Java server version

Desktop JRE

Patchsets for technology components, e.g. 11.1.0.6 to 11.1.0.7, 10.1.3.0 to 10.1.3.4, etc. Follow the certification matrix on Metalink for certified combinations.

Updated family packs (Financials, HRMS, etc)

Individual product updates

Latest AD patchset

Latest Autoconfig templates

6. Back it all up and create a gold copy.

Once you’ve done all this work, create a cold backup. Next time you need a clean environment, just restore your gold copy. Sounds basic, but I’m amazed at how many people don’t back up an environment they really want to live with going forward; why repeat all of this work?

Of course there are many other steps – security, OS management, monitoring, ongoing backups, etc. But the steps above will get your users set up nicely so they won’t be bugging you and you won’t have to bug them any more than necessary while you all get your feet wet in your shiny new R12 environment!

Use Autoconfig for common system administrator tasks

Autoconfig is a wonderful tool that may be extended and customized to meet a variety of needs. One mundane task I don’t deal with anymore is scripting certain basic operating system scripts. For example:

Rotating logs

Cleaning out old trace files

Init scripts

… are all examples of cron jobs and scripts that must be created post-install. Many DBAs have a set of scripts they use and modify, but why not use an autoconfig template to generate what you need every time?

I’ll use an init script as an example. Oracle provides adstrtal.sh and adstpall.sh for starting and stopping an apps environment; however neither of those scripts are ready to run out of /etc/init.d for system startup and shutdown.

Below is an Autoconfig template that will generate an init.d script that will call both adstrtal.sh and adstpall.sh on system startup and shutdown, respectively. The script is designed for a RedHat Linux variant like RHEL, OEL, or CentOS. The application version was 12.1.1.
#!/bin/bash

 mkdir -p $logdir
get_appspass
su – $appuser -c "$mgrctl abort $CONNECT" #| tee >>$LOG 2>&1
su – $appuser -c "$appstop $CONNECT" #| tee >>$LOG 2>&1
return $RETVAL
}

case $mode in
start
;;
stop
;;
abort
;;
*)
echo $USAGE
exit 1
esac

if [ $RETVAL -eq 0 ]; then
echo_success
else
echo_failure
fi
echo

exit $RETVAL
To install this script, all I need to do is the following:

Place the script in a template file in my custom application top.

Create a driver that will create the script; I usually create a /tools directory for this sort of thing.

Run autoconfig to create the script.

As root, copy the script to /etc/init.d

Use chkconfig to enable auto start/stop on system boot:
$ chkconfig –-add
$ chkconfig on
That’s it! Now every time I create a clone, I have a new init script for that node. If a path or other dependent context value changes, I simply copy the updated script into /etc/init.d and follow the steps above.

I should note that with this script specifically, because it requires the apps password, you should probably find a better way to store and retrieve the apps password. In this example, I put it in a file called /home/appl/.secret, which had permission bits set to 660. That’s an “OK” solution, but not great. The script grabs the password using a function specifically to allow minimal fuss and muss when updating the password storage and retrieval method.

Anyway, it’s pretty easy to see how one could leverage Autoconfig to create simple time-saving scripts because Autoconfig already “knows” where everything is.

Here’s an example of a script to clean up concurrent manager log and output:
#!/bin/sh

env_file="%s_applfenv%"

if [ ! -f $env_file ];
then
printf "Cannot find environment file $env_filen"
printf "ERRORCODE = 1 ERRORCODE_ENDn"
exit 1
else
. $env_file
fi

# Clean up concurrent manager log and output directories
/usr/bin/find $APPLCSF/$APPLOUT -name "*.out" -ctime
+%c_conc_out_ret% | xargs rm -rf
/usr/bin/find $APPLCSF/$APPLLOG -name "*.req" -ctime
+%c_conc_log_ret% | xargs rm -rf

# Clean up the instance logs
/usr/bin/find $INST_TOP/admin/log -type d -ctime
+%c_inst_log_ret% | xargs rm –rf;

exit $?
In this example, I created 3 custom context variables:

c_conc_out_ret
c_conc_log_ret
c_inst_log_ret

Each are set to the retention period in days for their respective logs.

Installation for a script like this is even more hands-off than an init script. Typically log cleanup scripts are called from cron and are often registered as individual crontab commands. For this script, a single crontab entry could point to the absolute location of the script. If the value of an environment or context variable changed at any time, running Autoconfig would automatically update the scheduled job.

Operating system maintenance plays a critical role in a well-organized, automated Apps environment; the less manual scripting there is, the less likely it is to be skipped.

If you want to improve certain aspects of Oracle’s new Flash-based Metalink, you can do so by disabling Flash. In Firefox or IE you can disable Flash discretely; in Safari, you need to disable all plugins.

Once Flash is disabled, log out of and back in to your browser and go to http://metalink.oracle.com. On the right, near the bottom, there should be a teeny-tiny, itty-bitty link that reads “Use My Oracle Support non-flash option,” which does not seem to appear when Flash is turned on.

If you disable flash, the Metalink notes are, in my opinion, much more readable. They return to a plain HTML format, and hitting the browser back button simply returns you to the previous URL instead of re-loading the entire site as I’ve complained about before.

Clearly Oracle would rather we use Flash. Immediately upon launching the non-flash site, a ton of information is missing from the front page and I’m sure many other features won’t work at all. For me, depending on what I want to do, this might be acceptable. Certainly if I’m just doing note research.

Whether I want to leave Flash off entirely is another question, one I will answer through trial-and-error in the next few days.
